Weavings

In addition to being a metalsmith and designer, Nicole Jo Melton is a fiber artist, creating her work in a small home studio in Chicago, IL. Nicole holds a degree in graphic design and fiber & material studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, however, Nicole learned sewing and many fiber techniques (crocheting, knitting, needlework/embroidery) when she was very young. She is a skilled weaver who makes most of her works on a 4-harness wooden floor loom and approaches the materials and equipment as a fine artist. She often employs portable looms when traveling. Many of the yarns she uses are handspun on her spinning wheel in the Knot & Splice studio. Nicole often works with vintage, deadstock, and fair trade fibers, and she supports many farms and fiber/yarn small companies within the United States and abroad. The garments and pieces she makes are hand-finished using embroidery, machine stitching, and hand-sewn techniques.

Driven by raw emotion and material response, Nicole's work is both intricate and textural. While some ideas are loosely planned, the work comes alive at the loom like a musical composition. Nicole weaves in a freeform style which imparts human touch and poetry.

A small selection of Nicole Jo Melton's hand-woven art works and wearable art garments are available in the Knot & Splice shop. See more of her process on her fiber art journal, @knotandsplicetextiles.
